Setting performance standards
The starting point is that all employees have a responsibility to achieve and maintain a satisfactory level of performance. This means they must do the job to the required standard and are obliged to attend training courses or take examinations if appropriate to their job role.
Take the time to explain the purpose, scope and accountabilities of the job and if you have job descriptions use these.
Also make clear the consequences of not meeting the specified standard, ie the help available and sanctions. This is particularly important for new and promoted employees, both of whom should be given reasonable periods of probation.
This is all very reasonable, so what should you do with someone who’s not performing?
